Try Something New: Why New Experiences Matter in Relationships
Share
When was the last time you and your partner did something for the first time together?
Not necessarily something BIG
Just something different
Because after you’ve been together for a while, it’s really easy to fall into a routine
You eat at the same restaurants. Watch the same shows. Have your usual date nights. Even the way you connect at home can start following a familiar pattern
And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having favorites
But sometimes it’s FUN to shake things up a little 😂
New experiences give you something to discover together, laugh about together, and maybe even turn into one of those stories you’re still talking about years later
New Experiences Create New Memories
Think about some of your favorite memories with someone
Chances are, a lot of them involve an experience
The spontaneous trip
The concert where you lost your voice
The restaurant you randomly tried and ended up LOVING
The date that went completely wrong but somehow became hilarious
There’s something about doing something new together that sticks with us
And you don’t need a plane ticket or an elaborate date to create that feeling
Sometimes you just need to interrupt the routine
Curiosity Can Bring You Back to Each Other
One of my favorite things about long term relationships is that you never actually finish learning about another person
People change
Preferences change
Comfort levels change
Curiosity changes
The person you’re with today isn’t exactly the same person you met years ago
And neither are you
That means there are ALWAYS new things to discover about each other
Trying something different gives you an opportunity to ask questions, communicate, laugh, and learn something you might not have known before
And sometimes that little bit of curiosity is exactly what a relationship needs
It’s About the Experience, Not Just the Product
This is something I talk about ALL the time
A product isn’t what creates connection
It’s what you DO with it
A wand isn’t memorable because it has a certain number of settings. It’s memorable because you decided to slow down and explore something different together
Rose can introduce a completely different type of sensation and give you something new to discover
A Spinner sleeve or Hawk Tuah sleeve can open the door for your partner to explore something different too
The product is simply the invitation
The experience is what you create together 💜
Take Turns Choosing Something New
Want an easy way to keep yourselves from slipping into the same routine?
Take turns choosing something new
And this doesn’t only have to apply to intimacy
Pick a restaurant neither of you has tried
Try a new date night activity
Cook something completely different together
Take a class
Make a playlist for each other
Try a new product
Ask questions you’ve never asked before
One person chooses this time. The other chooses next time
You might discover something you LOVE
You might discover something that is absolutely NOT for you 😂
Either way, you learned something together
And that’s part of the fun
There’s No Pressure to Love Everything
Trying something new doesn’t mean you have to love it
This is important
Sometimes we put so much pressure on a new experience that we forget we’re allowed to simply TRY it
Maybe it becomes a new favorite
Maybe you laugh the entire time
Maybe you decide once was plenty 😂
All three are perfectly good outcomes
Curiosity isn’t about finding the next thing you’re supposed to love
It’s giving yourselves permission to explore without needing to know the outcome first
Keep Discovering Each Other
Long term relationships naturally develop routines
That familiarity can be comforting and wonderful
But familiarity and curiosity can exist together
You can know someone incredibly well and still ask new questions
Still surprise them
Still learn something about them
Still have firsts together
And THAT is what I want you to take away from this
You don’t have to completely reinvent date night or your intimate life
Just occasionally choose something you haven’t done before
Final Thoughts
New experiences give us new things to talk about
New things to laugh about
New things to learn about ourselves
And new memories to create together
So the next time you notice yourselves slipping into autopilot, try asking one simple question
What haven’t we tried yet?
