When Stress Follows You Into the Bedroom
Share
Have you ever crawled into bed completely exhausted...but somehow your brain is still wide awake?
Did I switch the laundry?
What do I have tomorrow?
Did I answer that email?
What am I forgetting?
Meanwhile, your body is basically begging you to SHUT IT DOWN. 😂
Sound familiar?
Stress has a sneaky way of following us everywhere, including into our relationships and intimate lives.
And when your brain is juggling 47 different things, slowing down and connecting with someone else can feel a whole lot harder.
Stress Affects More Than Your Mood
Stress doesn’t only live in your head
Your body feels it too
Your muscles may tighten. Your breathing can change. You might have trouble sleeping. Your patience may be shorter. You may feel mentally exhausted even when you haven’t physically done much.
And yes, stress can affect your interest in intimacy too.
When your brain is focused on everything that needs to get done, switching gears into relaxation, connection, or pleasure isn’t always as simple as flipping a switch.
Sometimes even things you normally enjoy start feeling like one more thing on the list.
That doesn’t automatically mean there’s a problem with your relationship.
Sometimes your body and brain simply need a little help transitioning out of GO GO GO mode.
Relaxation Can Be Part of Connection
We tend to treat relaxation like a reward.
Finish everything first. THEN you can relax.
Except...when is everything actually finished? 😂
Creating small moments to slow down can help you transition from the responsibilities of the day into actually being present with yourself or your partner.
And it doesn’t have to be elaborate.
Give each other a back massage.
Sit on the couch and talk without your phones.
Light a candle.
Take a shower together.
Spend ten minutes touching without putting pressure on what needs to happen next.
Massage candles and body safe massage oils can be an easy way to make slowing down feel a little more intentional.
The goal doesn’t have to be intimacy.
The goal can simply be...
Let’s relax together.
And sometimes connection naturally grows from there.
Take the Pressure Off Intimacy
One of the quickest ways to make intimacy feel like another responsibility is believing every affectionate moment has to lead somewhere.
It doesn’t.
A massage can just be a massage.
Cuddling can just be cuddling.
Kissing can just be kissing.
Giving yourselves permission to enjoy physical connection without expecting a particular outcome can take some of the pressure off, especially during stressful seasons.
And when there’s less pressure, it can be easier to actually enjoy being close to each other.
Connection doesn’t always need an agenda.
Self Care Counts Too
Connection with your partner matters.
So does connection with yourself.
Self care doesn’t need to mean an entire spa day, a perfectly organized morning routine, or buying yourself something every time life gets stressful.
Sometimes it’s ten quiet minutes.
Reading your book instead of scrolling.
Taking a long shower.
Stretching.
Putting your phone somewhere you can’t reach it. 😂
Or using a body massager to help work through some of the tension you’ve been carrying around all day.
Taking time for yourself can help you recharge so you have a little more energy to give to everything and everyone else in your life.
Create a Transition Ritual
If you have a hard time going straight from work, parenting, errands, or responsibilities into connection mode, try creating a little transition between the two.
It doesn’t need to take an hour
Give yourself 10 or 15 minutes to intentionally shift gears
Change into something comfortable
Put your phone away
Take a shower
Stretch
Turn on music
Use your favorite massage oil or body massager
Sit somewhere quiet
Whatever helps YOUR brain recognize that the busy part of the day is over.
Think of it as creating a little breathing room between everything you HAVE to do and the people and things you actually want to enjoy.
Final Thoughts
Life probably isn’t going to magically become less busy
There will always be another email
Another errand
Another load of laundry
Another thing waiting for tomorrow
But you don’t need a completely empty schedule before you make room for yourself or your relationship.
Sometimes connection starts with ten quiet minutes.
Sometimes it’s asking your partner how they’re REALLY doing.
Sometimes it’s a back massage with absolutely no expectations attached.
And sometimes it’s deciding everything else can wait while you take care of yourself for a minute.
